Effective Fiber for Dairy Cows
نویسنده
چکیده
Unlike other nutrients, such as protein and calcium, where requirements are provided in grams per cow per day for specific body weight and milk production levels, fiber “requirements” are merely minimum guidelines (NRC, 2001) aimed at maintaining normal ruminal pH, fiber digestion and milk fat test and preventing sub-acute rumen acidosis (SARA), laminitis and displaced abomasums (LDA). NRC (2001) guidelines for minimum neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage, minimum total diet NDF, and maximum diet nonfiber carbohydrates (NFC) are presented in Table 1. Remember that these are fiber minimums and NFC maximums, and not recommended formulation targets for all situations.

متن کاملCreating a system for meeting the fiber requirements of dairy cows.
Current NRC recommendations for dairy cattle provide limited guidance to nutritionists for meeting the fiber and carbohydrate needs of lactating cows. The NRC provide only minimum recommendations for fiber and no accommodation for factors such as physical effectiveness of fiber, interactions with nonfibrous carbohydrates, or animal attributes, which can affect the optimality of dairy rations. T...
متن کاملSubstitution of neutral detergent fiber from forage with neutral detergent fiber from by-products in the diets of lactating cows.
Four lactating dairy cows that were ruminally and duodenally cannulated were used in an experiment with a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of the substitution of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage with NDF from wheat middlings, corn gluten feed, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy. Dietary crude protein and NDF averaged 18 and 31%, respectively, for the die...
متن کاملDefining Effective Fiber and Fiber Recommendations for Dairy Cows
Introduction Current NRC recommendations for dairy cattle provide only minimum recommendations for chemically measured fiber. However, physical characteristics of fiber can influence animal health, ruminal fermentation, animal metabolism, and milk fat production independently of the amount of chemically measured fiber. Using ground fibrous by-product feeds or finely chopped forages in rations t...
متن کاملEffect of Milk Urea Nitrogen of Dairy Cows in Relation to Breed
Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) of dairy cows was determined in relation to breed. A total of forty (40) Pabna and red Chittagong dairy cattle each of twenty (20) were selected to know the milk composition, nutritional status and milk urea nitrogen. Live weight of Pabna Cattle (187±14 kg) was higher than that of red Chittagong cattle (174±4 kg). In Pabna cattle milk yield (4.94 kg), minerals (0.15%) a...
